Parents ask all the time, “What can I do to help my child’s education?”
At this age, we really want to limit the amount of screen time!
There are so many educational experiences all around us that young children need to encounter!
You can help your child with writing by encouraging him/her to write notes, lists, letters, and journals – anything!! Remind your child to proofread. Help you child master spelling words! Have your child write family members’ “orders” for dinner.
You can help you child with science by tlaking about what we’re doing in science. You can supplement this by exploring other resources (videos, books, games, the internet, etc.) Consider giving science kits as gifts! Take a walk in nature and explore different plants, trees, and insects! There is so much science all around us!
You can help your child with social studies by talking about good citizenship, going on field trips to historical places, learning about our community, talking about traditions in your own family and helping him/her to resolve conflict with others.
You can help your child with reading by encouraging your child to read alone or aloud for 20 minutes every day – after chores and before television. Have your child tell you about what he/she read. Be a good role model and allow your child to see you reading (lists, the newspaper, street signs).
You can help your child develop good listening and speaking skills by modeling these skils. Encourage your child to practice by presenting poems, rhymes, oral reports, and jokes.
You can help you child with math by allowing him/her to practice it in real-life situations. Let them pay at the store, add the cost of two candy bars, count out cups of mile for that recipe and locate pattersn in our day-to-day life.
People say parents are a child’s first teacher, and no one disputes how very important parents are to the growth and development of their child. You are our partners in your child’s educational program.
